Water Balancing Tips

FROG® Water Care App testing — smartphone app for pool and spa water quality monitoring and maintenance guidance.

Water balance is key—test regularly to keep levels ideal: Total Alkalinity 80–120 ppm, pH 7.2–7.6, Total Hardness 150–250 ppm.

FROG® DropH® being poured into a TruDose™ cap over a hot tub — always adjust total alkalinity first using FROG® Target or DropH® before correcting pH.

Always adjust Total Alkalinity first—use FROG TArget to raise it or FROG DropH to lower it. Once it’s in the ideal range of 80–120 ppm, adjust pH.

FROG® @ease® Target measured one-quarter full in a TruDose™ cap — showing precise sanitizer dosing for hot tubs.

Test and adjust pH with FROG DropH or JumpH as needed. Once pH is 7.2–7.6, adjust Total Hardness.

FROG® @ease® Target being poured from a TruDose™ cap into a clear hot tub for precise sanitizer dosing.

Test water and adjust Total Hardness if needed. Total Hardness ideal level 150-250 ppm

When Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness are at ideal levels, add sanitizer. Use any FROG hot tub sanitizing system or your preferred option.

FAQ’s

Shocks are used to remove or oxidize contaminants, giving your sanitizer a boost. If shocking with chlorine, you need to add 10x the difference between your total and free chlorine reading to hit breakpoint chlorination – a bit of a math problem. We recommend a non-chlorine shock that breaks up combined chlorine and removes contaminants without adding more chlorine.

The chlorine typically used in hot tubs contains cyanuric acid that helps keep UV rays from burning off the chlorine molecules. With most hot tubs covered, UV from the sun is not an issue and the CDC recommends not using chlorine products with cyanuric acid in hot tubs. Cyanuric acid builds up quickly and erodes the effectiveness of the chlorine. Non-chlorine shocks provide the clean without the chlorine or cyanuric acid buildup. They also work quickly, so you can be back in the hot tub in as little as 15 minutes.

For most hot tubs, a weekly routine of shocking is always beneficial. With FROG @ease, due to its unique self-regulating chlorine, you can reduce shocking to once a month.

FROG StoMPS is the strongest dose of MPS (monopersulfate) – the technical name for a non-chlorine shock. It comes in a unique bottle with the FROG TruDose Cap that precisely measures out the correct dose for every hot tub. For a quick and easy way to shock, try FROG Maintain® single-use packets.
