Water Balancing Tips

FROG® Water Care App testing — smartphone app for pool and spa water quality monitoring and maintenance guidance.

Water balance is key—test regularly to keep levels ideal: Total Alkalinity 80–120 ppm, pH 7.2–7.6, Total Hardness 150–250 ppm.

FROG® DropH® being poured into a TruDose™ cap over a hot tub — always adjust total alkalinity first using FROG® Target or DropH® before correcting pH.

Always adjust Total Alkalinity first—use FROG TArget to raise it or FROG DropH to lower it. Once it’s in the ideal range of 80–120 ppm, adjust pH.

FROG® @ease® Target measured one-quarter full in a TruDose™ cap — showing precise sanitizer dosing for hot tubs.

Test and adjust pH with FROG DropH or JumpH as needed. Once pH is 7.2–7.6, adjust Total Hardness.

Test water and adjust Total Hardness if needed. Total Hardness ideal level 150-250 ppm

When Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness are at ideal levels, add sanitizer. Use any FROG swim spa sanitizing system or your preferred option.

FAQ’s

Also known as calcium hardness, Total Hardness refers to the amount of calcium and other minerals in the water that make it feel “hard” or “soft”. Swim spa water should maintain a Total Hardness level between 150 – 250 ppm. This should be tested when you first fill your swim spa.

When Total Hardness is below 150 ppm, the water can be corrosive; if it’s above 250 ppm, the water may lead to scaling. If you have the option of filling the swim spa with softer water, you can always add hardness. If your water is hard from the faucet, then it requires more work to get it balanced. Without a balanced Total Hardness, it will be very difficult to maintain proper balance and sanitizer levels and damage to the swim spa is almost certain.

Most often, it is due to the water that comes out of your tap to fill the swim spa. Every municipality is different, and many people have well water. Every time you add water to the swim spa due to evaporation, you are changing the Total Hardness.

The best option is to find a soft water source to fill the swim spa. Short of that, it’s best to check with your local dealer who understands what it takes to remove Hardness from swim spas in that region. If you don’t get the Hardness below 250 ppm, you will experience less effective sanitizing and damage to surfaces or equipment.

Low Total Hardness will search for any type of calcium and pull it from the swim spa surfaces, which results in pitting or etching. It also dries out skin and makes soaking an uncomfortable experience. However, there is an easy fix for this and that is to add a hardness increaser like FROG SooTHe.
