10 Tips to a Great Skin Care Routine
It’s important to take good care of your skin – and soaking in your hot tub can contribute to a great skin care routine.
The benefits of soaking in your hot tub are many: reduced stress, muscle relaxation, pain relief, boosted circulation, improved sleep – yet the flip side is that hot water strips your skin of the natural oil barrier that keeps it smooth and moist.
Check out these 10 tips to ensure that you get the most of your hot tub time and add to its benefits, especially to prevent dry skin and promote healthy skin:
1. Soak for the Maximum Recommended Time of 15 – 20 Minutes
Like a hot shower can dry out and irritate your skin, so can hot tub water. Cells located on the outer most layer of skin, keratin cells, can be damaged and disrupted, which creates dry skin and prevents cells from retaining moisture. Soaking in hot water is hugely beneficial, yet it also strips your skin of its natural moisture barrier, keeping your time at recommended limits in hot tub water can help.
2. Hydrate Often, Every Day
Drink a lot of water before, during and after your hot tub time. This will help overall and combat dehydrating effects hot tub water may cause.
How much? According to mayoclinic.com, men should drink about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day , women 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day.
You may want to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while in the hot tub – they can increase dehydration.
3. Shower Off Afterward
After your hot tub soak, rinse off in the shower. Use warm water and soap to wash away any lingering chlorine or other chemicals. Avoid hot water, it can strip away some of your skin’s natural outer surface protection and leave you vulnerable to irritants and dryness.
4. Exfoliate
While in the shower it’s important to remove dead skin cells. Exfoliating does the job. Why? Because dead skin cells can accumulate and make it harder for your skin to retain moisture. Exfoliating helps your skin naturally replenish new cells and even better, may help increase the rate at which your skin renews itself.
Choose exfoliating products with natural ingredients, like salt or sugar. Apply to your skin according to package directions and rinse.
5. Pat Dry, Don’t Rub
After your shower pat your skin dry for less than 20 seconds – be careful not to rub. Rubbing can pull and irritate dry skin.
Use towels made of a nonabrasive material like Egyptian cotton, which are extremely soft, yet durable and absorbent.
6. Take Care of Your Lips
Who hasn’t had dehydrated, chapped lips? Lips don’t have oil glands like the rest of your skin does. Keep your lips moisturized in and out of the hot tub.
Look for lip balms with jojoba oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, vitamin E, hemp, avocado oil, glycerin, humectants or water-based emollients. These ingredients help lips retain moisture and return their plump, healthy appearance.
You may want to avoid lip balms with formulas containing petroleum jelly, camphor, phenol, menthol, fragrance and alcohol. These ingredients tend to dry out your lips.
7. Dry Brush
Ever heard of dry brushing? It’s an ancient skin care practice with many benefits.
Like exfoliating, dry brushing helps shed dead skin cells, increases circulation and helps your skin absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. Clean, clear pores encourage and make it easier for your skin to regenerate new supple skin and retain moisture better.
8. Moisturize
Use a moisturizer within minutes after showering to trap moisture. Damp skin is more absorbent, and lotion will lock in the moisture from the shower. The market is full of moisturizers, and you may have your favorites! Like choosing a healthy lip balm, the same goes for moisturizers. Choose one with ingredients that sooth and smooth your skin, not those that contain chemicals and irritants.
