Additional Information

The @ease System combines the proven FROG mineral formula for killing bacteria with SmartChlor Technology that maintains a consistently low chlorine level for weeks.

Unlike normal chlorine that is used up when you get in, SmartChlor continues to maintain the same level, which is up to 75%* less than hot tubs using dichlor (standard hot tub chlorine). That’s why we call it self-regulating.  It goes to work when the hot tub needs sanitizing so there are no frustrating yo-yo chlorine levels.  This time-released method is also why less shock is needed to maintain the hot tub.

This technology is so unique it has its own testing method that’s easier than standard test strips.

In 2 seconds, you can know precisely whether your pH, Total Alkalinity and Hardness are balanced, plus whether or not SmartChlor® needs replacing. Simply dip the FROG @ease Test Strip into the water, remove with the pads facing up and shake once to remove the water on the FROG Test Strips. Then hold it up next to the color chart on the back of the bottle to compare colors.

If the SmartChlor color on the strip is darker than the bottle label, the water is fine. If it is lighter it’s time to replace the Smartchlor Cartridge.

This technology is so unique it has its own testing method that’s easier than standard test strips.

  • The FROG @ease Test Strip Out Indicator on the back of the Test Strip Bottle indicates if the SmartChlor cartridge is empty:
  • When the test strip color is lighter than the single-color image on the bottle, it’s time to replace the SmartChlor Cartridge.
  • If you think the SmartChlor cartridge may be empty, remove it from the system, drain all the water and shake the cartridge. If you don’t hear any ingredients inside, it’s empty – it’s time to replace it. If not, put it back in and test the water again in a few days

Set the FROG @ease SmartChlor Cartridge to the setting that matches your hot tub model number.

The dial is on the bottom of the silver SmartChlor cartridge, twist it up or down.

Once set, the SmartChlor Cartridge will maintain a low 0.5 to1.0 ppm chlorine level as long as the pH stays within 7.2 and 7.8.

When to adjust:

Because SmartChlor self-regulates at a low 0.5 to 1.0 ppm turning up the dial will only result in building up the reserve faster. Therefore, it is rare that you would need to increase the setting.

If you feel the SmartChlor cartridge is dispensing too quickly:

  • Try lowering the setting number by one
  • Decrease your hot tub’s circulation time
  • Free chlorine will always remain at 0.5 to 1.0 ppm, by decreasing the dial you are slowing the buildup of the reserve

The most common chlorine used in hot tubs

A unique form of chlorine that works only with FROG minerals

Dissolves quickly Dissolves slowly even in hot water
Used up immediately as contaminants enter the water and has no reserve Creates a reserve of chlorine that converts to free chlorine when contaminants enter the hot tub
Free chlorine level drops significantly under demand, more dichlor must be added to keep up with the demand – it’s a yo-yo effect Self-regulates; it maintains a consistent 0.5 to 1.0 free chlorine level in the hot tub for the life the cartridge
Must maintain industry standards of 2 – 4 ppm Reduces overall chlorine use up to 75%* by only needing 0.5 – 1 ppm
Contains up to 50% Cyanuric Acid, which leads to a quick build up resulting in itchy, cloudy water with shorter life. You must drain and refill more often. Contains zero Cyanuric Acid – no build up possible; the water lasts longer
Strong odors occur when dichlor combines with contaminants in the water. Requires a shock treatment. SmartChlor is self-shocking for the life of the cartridge. We recommend that you shock right before putting a new cartridge in which is about once a month. Therefore, when the SmartChlor level is declining as the old cartridge is used up you get rid of any contaminants with a shock and start, and then with a new cartridge. The result is no unpleasant odors at any time.

The amount of time a SmartChlor Cartridge will last is based on 3 things:

  1. The SmartChlor Cartridge dial setting, which is based on the number of gallons a hot tub holds:
  • The SmartChlor Cartridge is one size.
  • Whatever sanitizer you use, you’ll need more to sanitize more water, and less to sanitize less water.
  • Larger hot tubs require a higher SmartChlor Cartridge dial setting, which allows the SmartChlor to dissolve faster to sanitize larger hot tubs.
  1. The number of people who use the hot tub:
  • The more a hot tub is used, the more sanitization is needed.
  • If your hot tub is used frequently, you may need to turn the SmartChlor Cartridge dial up to sanitize your hot tub.  This will cause the SmartChlor Cartridge to run out faster.
  1. Filtration of water per day:
  • The more often the water is circulated the faster the SmartChlor dissolves.
  • If your hot tub has frequent filtration, you may want to turn down the SmartChlor Cartridge dial to slow down how fast the SmartChlor dissolves.

What is the average life for a SmartChlor Cartridge?

  • The recommended dial setting for the SmartChlor Cartridge is based on gallons and assumes 2 people using the hot tub 2-3 times per week, with a filtration of about 4 hours per day.
  • For a 400-gallon hot tub under those conditions, the SmartChlor Cartridge should last about 3-4 weeks.  Larger hot tubs, more frequent use, more people using the hot tub or more filtration time require a higher dial setting and will use up the SmartChlor Cartridge faster.

How can I get the longest life possible from my SmartChlor Cartridge?

  • The following guidelines should help lessen the demand on the SmartChlor and help it last longer:
    • Always keep your hot tub water balanced. Click here for our easy water balance guide
    • Always shower before using the hot tub
    • Only rinse swimsuits, don’t use detergent – if you do, rinse extra thoroughly
    • Keep hair out of the water
    • Keep contaminants, from food to beverages, leaves or debris out of the hot tub
    • If the hot tub is used more often, shock more often with a non-chlorine shock like FROG Maintain
  • If you use your hot tub less frequently or follow these guidelines, you may be able to turn the SmartChlor Cartridge dial setting down but REGULARLY check the SmartChlor Out Indicator on the FROG® @ease® Test Strips to ensure you have enough SmartChlor in the water to sanitize the water properly.

Bromine users: Drain, clean and refill the hot tub before using FROG @ease.

Dichlor users: Test your hot tub water to determine the Cyanuric Acid level:

  • If it’s below 20 ppm, you can convert immediately to FROG @ease
  • If it’s higher, you’ll need to drain, clean and refill the hot tub.

Now, Let’s Get Started!

Or Follow these directions:

    1. Test the hot tub water with FROG @ease Test Strips and balance your Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness (for help, see our water balance guidelines)
    2. Add FROG Jump Start® for a start-up shock
    3. Set the dial on the FROG @ease blue Mineral Cartridge to #4 (the dial is on the bottom of the cartridge)
    4. Set the FROG @ease silver SmartChlor Cartridge per the chart: (the dial is on the bottom of the cartridge)

    1. Place the cartridges in the holder and insert the cartridge holder between the filter cartridges, pushing down until it stays in place
    2. When the SmartChlor Cartridge is empty, replace it
    3. After 4 months of using the Mineral Cartridge, replace the entire FROG @ease System that includes a FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge
    4. Shock hot tub using FROG Maintain™

  • A hot tub using FROG @ease does not test the same way as a hot tub using dichlor
  • FROG @ease uses a unique chlorine, SmartChlor Technology, plus minerals to maintain a consistent low chlorine level and keep your hot tub water Cleaner, Clearer and Softer
  • FROG @ease Test Strips were designed especially with an Out Indicator, a one-color match that designates when the SmartChlor Cartridge is empty. They also measure Total Alkalinity, pH, and Total Hardness levels for proper water balance
  • When the FROG @ease Test Strip is lighter than the Out Indicator color block, located on the test strip bottle, it’s time to replace the SmartChlor Cartridge
  • FROG Test Strips do not measure Free Chlorine
  • Why? Since the Free Chlorine remains consistently at 0.5–1.0 ppm there is no need to test for it
  • SmartChlor creates a reserve that converts to Free Chlorine when it senses the demand, it’s self-regulating. The reserve will start high and slowly deplete over the life of the cartridge as it converts to Free Chlorine when needed – no action required
  • With standard chlorine, like dichlor, you must maintain a Free Chlorine level of 2.0 – 4.0 pm, much higher than FROG @ease, and you need to shock when the Total Chlorine level is higher than the Free Chlorine.
  • With SmartChlor, Total Chlorine will always be higher than Free Chlorine until the Cartridge is empty. Total chlorine is represented by the SmartChlor reserve that is slowly used up over the life of the cartridge

FROG®’s goal was and is to make water care easier for hot tub owners. Because sanitizers contain hazardous chemicals, FROG set out to create products with no measuring, no guessing and no accidental spilling.

Prefilled cartridges make replacing chemicals easy and convenient for hot tub owners, with no need to store opened containers.

FROG products are regulated by the EPA and DOT. This means FROG must meet the required standards for shipping and storage.

Currently, FROG is actively investigating how to help mitigate the plastics issue while continuing to provide all the benefits, that include not ever needing to touch, measure or store opened containers of chemicals.

The blue Mineral Cartridge last for 4 months. After that, most people choose to drain and refill their hot tub. Therefore, we packaged the new mineral cartridge with everything you need to start up a freshly filled hot tub.

When you refill your hot tub, you’ll need to balance your hot tub water with FROG @ease Test Strips and adjust as they indicate. Then add FROG Jump-Start to shock the water and insert your new Mineral Cartridge with a SmartChlor Cartridge in your holder custom designed for Bullfrog Spas®.

The SmartChlor and Mineral Cartridges work together. The SmartChlor self-regulates with a low level of chlorine on demand.  It needs to be replaced when depleted – the “Out Indicator” on the FROG @ease Test Strips indicates this.

The Mineral Cartridge lasts for 4 months, and then the minerals are spent (even if you feel or hear them inside.)

Our goal was to make hot tub water care easier, that’s why all the products are included in one System box. You can be assured that you’ll have what you need when you refill your hot tub.

In between, you can purchase the 3-pack of SmartChlor Cartridges.

I initially was having an issue with the Frog Ease system, but after reaching out for some guidance and tips on the proper use I haven’t had any issues since. I do think they tend to not last quite as long as advertised before dissipating, but the hot tubs been clean and much easier to stay on top of now.

Maintenance on our x8 series tub is fairly easy. We use the frog@ ease blue/silver cartridges. So far so good. My main inconvenience is having to drive 50 miles to purchase the product. I’ve searched Amazon with no luck. Found frogs floating chlorinators and the in line system but no cartridges. To my knowledge the store I purchased the tub from is the only place I can purchase the product. So making the product more available at say retailers such as Walmart or ACE Hardwares or even on line would be very helpful and appreciated. Frustrated

    • Kris Gruidl

Hi Mike, we’re sorry it’s frustrating trying to find the FROG products for Bullfrog. They are sold only at Bullfrog retailers because of the unique fit with their filter cartridges. You could visit, they sell products online and you could also ask their Customer Support for some help.

This system works great in my spa. Other than adjusting for hardness and a bit of ph it’s a hands off deal all summer long. Just wish the containers were refillable to be more environmentally friendly. My 300 gal last about 3-4 weeks in the #2 setting.

  4. Sterling Miles

    Rating: 1

Wanted to like it but it’s an obvious money grab. If you use the tub a few times a week chlorine last 2 ish weeks for 500 gal bullfrog spa. Only way it makes it a month is if you don’t use it. I test the water weekly. The issue is the miniscule amount of chlorine in these. 120 dollars just in chlorine in 2.5 to 3 months… margin is greedy. I spend less on my large pool. Will not buy a bullfrog spa again due to the at ease system. Inability to buy on Amazon is inconvenient. Not a fan of all the plastic waste.

Hi Sterling, thanks for writing us a review. We’re sorry to hear you’re having issues with your Bulllfrog FROG @ease system, but we know we can help. The SmartChlor Cartridge is designed to last up to 4 weeks, depending upon your hot tub size and use. We’ve tested this extensively. Is it possible you are not using FROG @ease test strips? We ask because other test strips will show you Total Chlorine and Free Chlorine ranges that are different than the way FROG @ease works and this causes confusion. But, we need to learn more details from you to help solve your issues. Please call Dan at 800-222-0169 or email, he can talk with you to determine a solution to get your system working properly.

The Frog@ease system does keep this spa much healthier and balanced. I do have a problem with the wasted containers. Especially the chlorine as they only last 2-3 weeks in my spa. These should be refillable at least. The cartridge system makes it expensive for chlorine which should be cheap. To me, you should be offering these at a great discount to your customers as your spas should not be so hard to maintain! My last spa I rarely had to use chlorine–just the ozone and mineral packs. I could leave it for 4 months and it would be perfect! This spa cannot be left but for a few days and I have green water! While I like the modular system, this tub is way too hard to maintain! Dangerous.

      Hi Cathy,
Thanks for your review. It sounds like you need some help with your spa – FROG @ease is designed to be easy and keep your hot tub ready to use when you are. What you have described is quite the opposite of how FROG @ease works. Please call Dan at 800-222-0169, we need some details so we can help resolve what’s happening.

Works well. The shock seems to be not needed and clouds up things. Balancing out water when filled and then maintaining with the Ease system keeps water clear and clean.

  9. Lisa Ouellette

It’s ok. I’d rather use something refillable. Gray doesn’t last long enough for the month and for some reason blue ends half way between gray running out. And you can’t buy the blue buy itself. I have so many gray cartridges its not funny. I have the smaller hot tub and it’s definitely not a one size fits all system!! I’m trying to figure out how to just go back to my old brand where I know exactly what works…..

    • Tom Sager

      Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your review – we’re super glad you wrote because now we can help. Your description is helpful and we agree – your FROG @ease system is definitely not working as we manufactured and tested it to work. We’re sorry this has become troublesome and we’d really like to help. The blue mineral cartridge will last 4 months on any hot tub up to 600 gallons so you simply replace that one every 4 months. We can help you get the most from your silver SmartChlor Cartridge, as that will last different times based on hot tub use.

Writing back and forth on a review is not very helpful since we have questions about your hot tub, your water and what’s going on. If you will please contact us, we’d like to hear more from you so we can help you. We have tons of people using FROG @ease who really like it, and we’d like to hear from you to give you some easy, practical tips. Please either email or call Dan Mosier at or 800-222-0169.

      Thank you!

Maintaining the water in the Bullfrog Spa has been frustrating. Cloudy, foamy water even after draining and refilling. Have to agree with Mr. Kinney.. Frog @ease is a money gimmick. Set the cartridges as directed according to spa model and little chlorine pellets were in the bottom of spa that did not dissolve. We had two other spas and never had a problem with ph, foam, or cloudy water and they were easy to maintain. Very disappointing!

    • Tom Sager

Thank you for your review. It’s important for us to hear what’s happening with your water care. The chlorine pellets you described cannot be from the FROG @ease for Bullfrog cartridge, however, they indicate that the water is not balanced. We can’t be sure how to give you good guidance until we hear specifics from you. If you give Dan Mosier a call at 800-222-0169 or email him at, he will take time to ask you questions, hear about your experience and give you detailed advice to correct the problems.
