pH is the measure of how acidic or basic (alkaline) your hot tub or swim spa water is. Low pH levels are acidic. High levels are alkaline. When balancing hot tub or swim spa water, pH is always tested and adjusted after Total Alkalinity is balanced to 80-120 ppm. Then, always maintain a pH of 7.2-7.6.
pH affects the ability for sanitizers to kill bacteria efficiently. At a neutral pH of 7.2-7.6. sanitizers work at their best. Lower or higher than that, sanitizers lose their effectiveness, which can cause cloudy or green water. Unbalanced pH will also create a harsh feeling to the water and hot tub or swim spa surfaces and equipment can experience corrosion or scaling.
Often, the water you use to fill your hot tub or swim spa can have a naturally low pH plus, contaminants like body oils, sweat and lotions can decrease pH. The type of chlorine typically used in hot tubs and swim spas has a low pH, so every time you add it to the water, you lower the pH. Sometimes it can also be caused by using too much pH down when trying to lower pH.
A low pH level means your hot tub or swim spa water is acidic, which can not only cause corrosion of surfaces and equipment, but it also makes your sanitizer far less effective which can lead to cloudy or green water. It also makes the water less comfortable as it can strip the skin of natural oils, leaving it dry and itchy.
