Now that you’re enjoying your swim spa, we hope water care is the furthest thing from your mind. When you step out of the water, you shouldn’t have to worry about adding more chlorine or becoming a backyard chemist.
FROG® @ease® is designed to make swim spa water care easy. To help your SmartChlor® Cartridge last as long as possible and perform at its best, follow these simple tips.
1. Keep Your Swim Spa Water Balanced
Maintaining balanced water is important for many reasons, including helping your SmartChlor Cartridge work effectively. When water is out of balance, SmartChlor may have to work harder, which can lead to faster depletion.
Unbalanced Total Alkalinity, pH or Total Hardness can also make your swim spa water less comfortable and potentially damage swim spa surfaces and equipment.
Use FROG @ease Test Strips to monitor your water and adjust as needed. Consistency is key. Keep your water balanced, and you’ll help your SmartChlor Cartridge perform at its best.
Ideal water balance levels:
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- pH: 7.2 – 7.6
- Total Hardness: 150 – 250 ppm
2. Rinse Your Body and Swimsuit
Taking a quick shower before getting into your swim spa may seem like an extra step, but it can make a big difference in your water quality and help you get the most out of your SmartChlor Cartridge.
Showering rinses away oils, lotions, deodorants and other residues that would otherwise enter the water. These contaminants increase the demand on your sanitizer, causing the SmartChlor Cartridge to work harder and potentially deplete faster.
Hair can also carry oils, styling products and other residues into the water. Put long hair up or consider wearing a swim cap to help keep these contaminants out.
Don’t forget about your swimsuit, either. Rinse swimsuits after use and avoid washing them with detergent when possible. Detergent residue can contribute to unwanted contaminants and foam in your swim spa water.
3. Reduce Contaminants
The fewer contaminants in your water, the less work SmartChlor has to do. Keep leaves, twigs, grass clippings, dirt and other debris out of your swim spa. These can introduce organic matter that affects water quality and increases demand on your SmartChlor Cartridge.
Food and drinks can also introduce unwanted contaminants. As tempting as a swim spa snack may be, enjoying food and beverages away from the water can help keep your swim spa cleaner.
4. Shock Monthly
To maintain clean, clear water and help your SmartChlor Cartridge perform at its best, use FROG Maintain® for Swim Spas once a month or whenever you replace your SmartChlor Cartridge.
FROG Maintain is a non-chlorine shock that oxidizes organic contaminants like sweat, oils and lotions. By breaking down these contaminants, it helps keep your water clean and reduces the workload on SmartChlor.
Because FROG Maintain is a non-chlorine shock, it doesn’t add extra chlorine to your swim spa water. It’s also cyanuric acid free, so it won’t contribute to cyanuric acid build-up.

5. Keep Your Swim Spa Clean
Regular swim spa maintenance supports better water quality and helps reduce demand on your SmartChlor Cartridge. Be sure to clean filters regularly, wipe down spa surfaces and keep the cover clean (and on when not in use).
6. Replace Cartridges When Needed
A SmartChlor Cartridge typically lasts 3-4 weeks, depending on spa size and usage. You’ll know it’s time for a replacement when the cartridge flips upside down, or a FROG @ease Test Strip shows the SmartChlor level is lighter than the “Out Indicator.”
