Does your swim spa look more like a bubble bath than a place to relax?
A little foam may seem harmless, but it’s usually a sign that your water could use a little attention.
The good news? Foamy swim spa water is easy to understand—and even easier to prevent with the right water care routine.
Let’s explore what causes foam, how to clear it quickly and the simple habits that help keep your swim spa water fresh, clear and ready whenever you are.
What Causes Foam in a Swim Spa?
Foam forms when air mixes with surfactants already present in your swim spa water. Surfactants reduce water’s natural surface tension, making it easier for bubbles to form and stick together.
The more surfactants that build up over time, the more likely you’ll notice foam whenever the water is moving.
What Causes Surfactant Buildup?
Common sources include body oils, lotions, sunscreen, deodorant, cosmetics, detergent residue left in swimsuits, soap, biofilm and imbalanced water chemistry. Understanding where these come from makes it much easier to keep your water fresh and foam-free.
How to Fix Foamy Swim Spa Water
Foamy water doesn’t have to interrupt your swim. Start with these simple steps to restore your water and get back to enjoying your swim spa.
1. Balance Your Water
Always begin by testing and balancing your water. Proper water balance helps every other part of your water care routine work more effectively.
Balance in this order:
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- pH: 7.2 – 7.6
- Total Hardness: 150 – 250 ppm
2. Shock the Swim Spa
If foam remains after balancing the water, it’s time to shock your swim spa.
Shocking helps break down oils, lotions and other organic contaminants while refreshing your sanitizer, leaving your water cleaner, clearer and more inviting.
FROG® Maintain® for Swim Spas provides a simple, one-dose, non-chlorine shock with no measuring required.
3. Remove Oils and Residue
If balancing and shocking don’t eliminate the foam, use a scum absorber to remove oils, lotions and other contaminants from the water. Multiple absorbers can help speed up the process.
4. Address Biofilm
If biofilm has developed inside your swim spa, a complete refresh is the best solution.
Drain the water, clean the filter, surfaces and plumbing according to your manufacturer’s recommendations, rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh water.
Once refilled, balance the water before adding your sanitizer so you can start fresh with clean, healthy water.
Five Ways to Help Prevent Foam
Keeping your swim spa foam-free is easier than treating it after it appears. These simple habits help maintain cleaner water while making routine maintenance quick and easy.
1. Drain and Refill Regularly
Think of draining and refilling your swim spa as giving your water a fresh start. Fresh water removes dissolved contaminants that naturally build up over time, helping restore the clean, clear and comfortable experience you look forward to every soak.
If you use FROG® @ease® for Swim Spas, you can typically extend the time between drains by replacing the SmartChlor® Cartridge as needed and the Mineral Cartridge every four months.
2. Shock on a Routine Schedule
Using a non-chlorine shock on a regular schedule helps break down oils, lotions and other contaminants before they have a chance to create foam.
With FROG® @ease® for Swim Spas, shocking is typically needed only once a month.
3. Clean Your Filter
A clean filter removes the tiny particles that contribute to cloudy or foamy water.
Rinse it regularly and deep clean it about once a month. Keeping a spare filter on hand makes maintenance quick and easy.
4. Rinse Before You Soak
A quick rinse with fresh water before getting in helps wash away lotions, deodorant, sweat and other products that can build up in your swim spa.
It’s a simple habit that goes a long way toward keeping your water fresh and crystal clear.
5. Dedicate a Swimsuit
Choose one swimsuit just for your swim spa and rinse it with clean water instead of washing it with detergent after every use. This simple step helps reduce detergent residue entering your water.
The Foam Finale
Foamy water doesn’t have to become part of your swim spa routine.
By keeping your water balanced, following a simple maintenance schedule and staying ahead of buildup, you’ll enjoy cleaner, clearer water that’s always ready when you are.
