Knowing how many gallons are in a hot tub or swim spa is essential for proper water care. The amount of water your hot tub or swim spa holds directly impacts how much sanitizer, shock and balancing chemicals you should use.
Read on to easily calculate your spa’s gallon size.
Why Volume Matters
Understanding your hot tub or swim spa volume in gallons ensures:
- Proper chemical dosing
- Balanced water chemistry
- Better performance and longer equipment life
Method 1 – Fill Time
The most accurate way to determine how many gallons your hot tub or swim spa holds is by measuring fill time.
- Time how long it takes to fill your hot tub or swim spa completely
- Convert that time to total seconds
- Use the same hose (and pressure) to fill a 1-gallon bucket and time it
- Divide total fill time by the bucket fill time, for example:
- Hot tub fill time = 30 minutes = 1800 seconds
- 1-gallon bucket fill time = 6 seconds
- 1800 ÷ 6 = 300 gallons
This method gives you a reliable estimate of how much water is in your hot tub or swim spa.
Method 2 – Dimensional Calculation
If you want a faster estimate, outside of fill time, you can calculate gallons based on size and shape. This method is commonly used in hot tub and swim spa calculators and works well for quick approximations.
Portable Acrylic-Fiberglass Hot Tubs
Use the outside cabinet dimensions (in inches).
Square or Rectangular:
- Volume = Length × Width × Average Depth × 0.0034
Round or Multi-Sided:
- Volume = Diameter × Diameter × Average Depth × 0.0034 × 0.785
In-Ground, Soft or Wooden Hot Tubs
These tubs have fewer internal components, so water volume is slightly higher.
Square or Rectangular:
- Volume = Length × Width × Average Depth × 0.0040
Round or Irregular Shapes:
- Volume = Diameter × Diameter × Average Depth × 0.0040 × 0.785
