Swimming Pools 101: How Swimming Pools Work

A woman lifts a young child in a sunlit pool.

Simply speaking, swimming pools are just big basins of water and regardless of shape and size and they all generally work in the same way.

How Does a Pool Work?

In basic terms, a pool works by continuously circulating water through its filtration and treatment systems. Water is drawn from the pool through the main drain and skimmer, then moves through the pump, filter and chemical treatment system, such as a chlorinator or Piscina FROG® Sistema, before returning to the pool.

This continuous circulation helps filter out dirt and debris while the sanitizing system helps control bacteria and keep the water clean and clear. Some pools also include a heater to maintain a comfortable water temperature.

The Pool Circulation Cycle

You can think of your pool like a loop:

Pool → Skimmer & Drain → Pump → Filter → Heater → Chemical System → Return Jets → Pool

  • Water is constantly moving
  • Filtration removes debris
  • Chemicals sanitize the water
  • Distributes clean water evenly

Why Pool Circulation Matters

Without consistent circulation, even well-balanced water can quickly become unstable. Proper circulation is essential for:

  • Removing debris and contaminants
  • Evenly distributing chemicals
  • Preventing algae growth
  • Maintaining clear, clean water

The Components of a Pool System

  1. The Pool Basin

The structure that holds the water — typically made of concrete, vinyl or fiberglass.
  2. Skimmers

Located at the surface of the pool to collect leaves, bugs, and large debris before they sink.
  3. Main Drain(s)

Located at the bottom of the pool, they pull water from deeper areas for circulation.
  4. Pool Pump

The pump is the heart of the system. It pulls water from the pool, pushes it through the filtration system and keeps it moving to prevent stagnation.
  5. Pool Filter

The filter removes smaller particles from the water. Common types include sand filters, cartridge filters and DE (diatomaceous earth) filters. This is what keeps your pool water clear.
  6. Heater (Optional)

Not all pools have heaters, but they are common in cooler climates. They warm the water to a comfortable temperature.
  7. Chemical Feeder/Sanitizing System

    Sanitizes the water.
  8. Return Jets

    Help circulate treated water evenly.
  9. Plumbing

Connects all system components and moves water efficiently through the entire system.
  10. Timer or Automation System

Regulates the run time of the pump. Helps maintain consistent water circulation and reduce energy use.
