How to Close Your Pool for Winter with Flippin’ FROG XL®

A person pulls a blue cover over an above-ground pool with leaves floating on the water.

Steps to Closing Your Pool

  1. Balance the Water
Always start by balancing your water.
  2. Shock the Pool
Add a non-chlorine shock to remove contaminants and clean the water before closing.
    • Wait 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.
  3. Add Algaecide
Add an algaecide like FROG® 90-Day Algae Barrier®
    • Helps prevent algae growth over the winter
    • Works with shock as a “one-two punch” to keep water clean
  4. Lower the Water Level
    • Lower water to about 2 inches below the skimmer opening
    • Helps prevent freezing damage to pipes and the skimmer
  5. Drain Equipment
Drain all water from pumps and filter. This prevents freezing and damage over winter.
  6. Remove and Store FROG System
Take the Flippin’ FROG XL out of the pool. If chlorine remains, wrap cartridge in plastic and store in a safe place. Discard the Mineral Cartridge (it’s used up after one season)

Final Tip

Properly balancing and treating your water before closing helps ensure an easier, cleaner pool opening in the spring. You’ll thank yourself!
