4 Keys to a Clean, Balanced Pool

A young man dives into an above-ground pool from a wooden deck on a sunny day.

Keeping your pool clean, clear and comfortable takes more than simply adding chemicals. Proper pool water care relies on four essential elements working together: circulation, filtration, water balance and sanitization.

When one of these elements is off, it can affect your water quality and make your pool more difficult to maintain.

Pool Circulation

Pool circulation is how water moves throughout your pool system — and it’s critical for effective cleaning and treatment. Proper circulation ensures:

  • Water is evenly mixed from top to bottom
  • Debris is carried to the filtration system
  • Pool chemicals are distributed evenly

Poor circulation can lead to:

  • Cloudy or stagnant water
  • Increased strain on your pool pump and plumbing
  • Uneven chemical levels

How to improve circulation:

  • Ensure you have the proper pump size and run time
  • Use your pool regularly – movement helps circulation!
  • Keep your water balanced

Pool Filtration

Pool filtration removes unwanted particles from the water as it circulates through your system. Good filtration is essential for maintaining clear water.

How Does Filtration Work?

  • Skimmers and strainers catch large debris like leaves and bugs
  • Pool filters remove finer particles like dirt, oils, and buildup

Pool Water Balance

Pool water chemistry plays a major role in how well your system performs and how your pool feels. Unbalanced water can cause scaling or corrosion, equipment damage and reduced sanitizer effectiveness. Regular testing and adjustments help you maintain proper Total Alkalinity, pH and Total Hardness in your pool. Balanced water ensures:

  • Pool chemicals work effectively
  • Water feels comfortable on skin and eyes
  • Equipment and surfaces are protected

Ideal Levels for Pools:

  • Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
  • pH: 7.2-7.8
  • Total Hardness: 200-400 ppm

Pool Sanitization

Sanitization removes bacteria, algae and contaminants from your pool water. Sanitizers like chlorine kill bacteria and algae. Oxidizers (pool shock) break down organic contaminants, including body oils, makeup and environmental debris.

Here’s how to keep your pool sanitized:

  • Maintain a consistent sanitizer level (residual)
  • Use pool shock weekly or after rain and heavy use like a pool party

For a successful pool water treatment system, all four elements must work in balance:

  • Circulation moves the water
  • Filtration removes debris
  • Water balance optimizes chemistry
  • Sanitization keeps water clean

FROG® Sanitizing systems transform your pool by combining proprietary FROG Sanitizing Minerals® with low levels of chlorine to destroy bacteria. The result is Fresh Mineral Water®∞, our signature water quality experience that’s gentler on skin and free from the harsh, over-chlorinated feel of traditional pool care.

  • Uses up to 50% less chlorine*
  • Less chlorine creates water that is cleaner, clearer and softer
  • Easier on skin, swimsuits and pool surfaces
  • No harsh odors

* Compared to the minimum EPA recommended chlorine level of 1.0 ppm for a stabilized swimming pool

∞ Cleaner, Clearer and Softer water for pools, hot tubs and swim spas
