Pump Run Time
To calculate how many hours per day your pump should run in order to “turn over” your total volume of water at least once per day, you will need to know how many gallons per minute are pushed through your pump and how many gallons of water are in your pool.
To ascertain how many gallons per minute your model of pump is pushing, check the owner’s manual that came with your pump, or contact the pump manufacturer. The typical pump on a swimming pool will push 40 – 80 gallons per minute (gpm)
Determine your necessary run time using the following formula:
- gpm x 60 (minutes) = total gallons per hour through your pump
- gallons in your pool ÷ gallons per hour = run time
For example, let’s assume that your pool holds 36,000 gallons of water and your pump pushes 40 gpm:
In this case, you would need to run your pump for 15 hours per day to turn over your pool’s water once.
